Band Program – Years 5 and 6

Macquarie has a years 5 and 6 brass band program run by the ACT Instrumental Music Program for selected students. At the beginning of the year, students in year 5 are assessed through a listening test as to their suitability for participation in the band program. No previous instrumental experience is required. Selected students are invited to join the band program for two years. Students have two 40 minute lessons with a teacher from the Instrumental Music Program each week during class time. They also have one practice session with the MPS teacher supporting the band during a lunch break. A commitment to home practice is essential. Costs are associated with participation in this program. Parents can apply for financial support for the child to participate in the band if required. This application is made to the school Principal.

Book Club

Ashton Scholastic provides a ‘Book Club’ for our school. Catalogues/order forms are sent home with students twice per term. Order forms should be returned to your child’s teacher or the front office. Ordered items are distributed to students. Book Club orders earn rewards that are used for purchasing extra books and learning materials for our school. Annually we hold a Scholastic Book Fair. The Book Fair is an opportunity to support the school through purchasing books and other reading materials.

Book Week

Book Week is in August each year and celebrates Australian children's literature. During the week students read many of the books shortlisted by the Children’s Book Council of Australia. The culmination of the week is a school celebration/assembly where students are encouraged to dress up as a favourite book character. For more information: https://www.cbca.org.au

Breakfast Club

Breakfast Club is run by the P&C every Friday morning from 8.45am to provide students with toast or Weetbix for breakfast before school starts. This is available at the back of the hall.

Buddy Program

Our class buddy program allows for friendships across different year levels and encourages senior students to support their peers through activities such as reading, fitness, and art and craft. At the beginning of each year, the staff create an equitable buddy class system to ensure each class is allocated a buddy class. Where possible, siblings are not placed together in buddy class programs. Currently the preschool and kindergarten classes have 3/4 classes as buddies and the 1/2 classes are buddied up with 5/6 classes.

Buildings

Macquarie Primary School has four buildings:

·        Namadgi: administrative offices and senior classrooms

·        Brindabella: library and junior classrooms

·        Tidbinbilla: hall, canteen, small group program and junior classrooms in the loft (a double classroom space)

·        The Pinnacle: preschool.

Bus Travel and Safety

Bus routes, timetables and information regarding the MyWay travel card can be found on the Transport Canberra website

If your child needs to catch a bus home from school, please let the classroom teacher know. To ensure student safety while waiting for the bus after school, a staff member stays with students at the bus stop directly out the front of the school on the same side of the road.
